The long-delayed Maju Expressway Extension (MEX II) project is now getting much-needed attention, as the Works Ministry pledges to collaborate with all key stakeholders to push the project forward.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed that the ministry is actively engaging with relevant agencies — including the Finance Ministry, the Public Works Department (JKR), and the project funders — to resolve lingering issues that have stalled the highway's progress.
“MEX II, as everyone is aware, is facing challenges in reaching completion,” said Nanta. “However, the good news is that all relevant parties are working together to help resolve the issue. Even the funders involved are cooperating.”

Background: A Long-Overdue Expressway
The 18-kilometre MEX II is a crucial highway project designed to link Putrajaya directly to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Construction began in 2016 and was originally slated for completion in December 2019.
Since then, however, the project has faced repeated delays, raising public concern over escalating costs and prolonged inconvenience.
What's Happening Now?
Minister Nanta announced that a series of high-level meetings will be convened soon, chaired by the Works Ministry's deputy secretary-general, to identify and act on the root causes of the delay.
Meanwhile, the Minister was in Bukit Kayu Hitam to inspect progress on another key infrastructure initiative — the cross-border road alignment between Malaysia’s ICQS complex and Thailand’s Sadao CIQ.
Why MEX II Matters
Once completed, MEX II will significantly reduce travel time between Putrajaya and KLIA, offering a faster, more direct route for commuters, airport staff, and logistics operators. With air travel and airport activity rebounding post-pandemic, the completion of this extension is more critical than ever.
